Exploring One Health: 2021 Achievements

Event description

The Exploring One Health series was an event for undergraduate and graduate students to learn about One Health and its presence and use in the real world. This series consisted of 5 learning modules in which students were introduced to the concept of One Health by professionals of varying backgrounds. The students were then given the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of One Health and where it is present around them. Exploring One Health also offered students the chance to learn One Health applications to research and emergency response situations through case studies. Finally, students were able to meet with a handful of professionals and ask questions about their experiences with integrating One Health in their work.

Final thoughts

One of the most interesting outcomes of the Exploring One Health series was from the final module: One Health and You. The word cloud to the right lists the broad range of career aspirations expressed by the Exploring One Health series participants. This included careers as diverse as Climate Resilience Planner, Dietitian, Teacher, Rheumatologist, Knowledge Translation Specialist, Farmer and Animal Welfare One Health Specialist.

Additionally, a follow-up survey found that while only 9% of participants considered themselves ‘extremely’ or ‘very’ knowledgeable about One Health before participating in Exploring One Health, a whopping 75% of participants completed their certificate with the same affirmation.
